The war with Iran is showing us all the worst predictions, which many of us have made, about the fragility of a globalised system and a globalised economy are true. Three times in the past 20 years the globalised economy has brought the entire world to the brink of total collapse, with its ridiculously overextended supply chains. Once during the Global Financial Crisis, once during the Covid Pandemic Crisis and now with the major regional war in the Gulf.
Considering that full throttled globalisation of the economy really only occurred in the years 1998 to 2001 this is a shockingly fast failure of a system. There are clearly massive flaws in this system that requires it to be consigned to the dustbin of history.
The fact that Australia so instantaneously found itself facing collapsing fuel lines is insane. This is made more insane when one considers that according to all the think tanks, and military hardware spruikers the past 10 years, Australia has been gearing up a wartime economy to prepare for a major confrontation with China in the Pacific. Yet we now find out that some of our most important supply chains are CONTROLLED by China by our choice.
This would mean an instantaneous and catastrophic defeat against China, if we ever went into a conflict with them. Everyone is well versed in the history of the Nazi’s running out of petroleum in the European theatre and this being a major cause of their defeat in the war. And yet some how we seem to have no strategic planning, under Neo-Liberal globalisation Governments.
Coupled with the fuel crisis we have also discovered, thanks to this conflict, that we face a fertiliser crisis. Much has been written over the years about the “Green Revolution”, and how increasing food yields have helped build the world to its current large population. But now we find these supply chains are extremely fragile and can immediately collapse due to events half a world away. The risk of global famine being this easy to generate is a system we should never tolerate as a civilisation.
The solution to all this is what we have been harping on about on this blog FOREVER. We MUST decouple from globalisation and return to a policy of Economic Nationalism around the world. Ironically this is a policy that the Trump administration, the very same administration that has now blown up the global supply chain, was advocating for when it began its Tariffs program, a program that was deeply misunderstood by the rest of the world.
As part of this Economic Nationalism we must restore a majorly decentralised world system, made up of hundreds of Nations States with localised economies. Local Production for Local Consumption should be the motto everywhere. Of course under that banner global trade will still occur, as not everyone has access to the same recourses and there will need to be a balance created around the world of access to the items that provide the level of civilisation that a human population can sustain.
As we have posited a new geopolitical map for the world to function under this structure must be realised:
Global nations distribution
We must begin working on a restored Westphalian world if we are to avoid the complete collapse; such as we have seen happen to other previous civilisations whose ruins we still fascinate over to this day:
