The
Republic of Greenland is an arctic nation that currently has an association
with Denmark. It has a strong secession movement within it however and the
current wave of people, seeking to restore their sovereignty, is unlikely to miss
this part of the world.
It has already attained full autonomy in its relations
with Denmark, so a final step to full independence is not a very hard move at
this point. Ethnic Inuits, from nearby North American regions, primarily inhabit
the island. An independent Greenland would be made up of the territories of the
Kujalleq, Qaasuitsup, Qeqqata and Sermersooq municipalities, currently in the
Greenland autonomous country of Denmark. Added to this will be the Northeast
Greenland National Park, also currently a part of the Greenland autonomous
country of Denmark.
The
flag of Greenland was designed during the push for home rule in the late 70’s.
Numerous competitions were held seeking design ideas. The final choice was
adopted in 1985.
