Neo Westphalian Europe Part 36: Republic of Greenland

The Republic of Greenland is an arctic nation that currently has an association with Denmark. It has a strong secession movement within it however and the current wave of people, seeking to restore their sovereignty, is unlikely to miss this part of the world.

It has already attained full autonomy in its relations with Denmark, so a final step to full independence is not a very hard move at this point. Ethnic Inuits, from nearby North American regions, primarily inhabit the island. An independent Greenland would be made up of the territories of the Kujalleq, Qaasuitsup, Qeqqata and Sermersooq municipalities, currently in the Greenland autonomous country of Denmark. Added to this will be the Northeast Greenland National Park, also currently a part of the Greenland autonomous country of Denmark.

The flag of Greenland was designed during the push for home rule in the late 70’s. Numerous competitions were held seeking design ideas. The final choice was adopted in 1985.

Neo Westphalian Europe Part 35: Scandinavia & The Baltics

The Scandinavian and Baltic regions are likely to undergo a number of shifts in their borders, as the Western Empire crumbles and Westphalia is restored. This region will be an incredibly sensitive area to devolve power in, due to it being adjacent to the Baltic Sea. Careful negotiation with the Russians will be required to prevent an outbreak of devastating conflict in the region.

However it is likely that with a promise for all these nations to withdraw from NATO and a series of replacement, regional, security and trade pacts that ensure Russia is not excluded from the region, then the modern Russian state should be able to be convinced to allow this decentralisation of power to occur. The current Russian oligarchy claims it is inspired by the ideals of identitarianism. Therefore allowing the identity of the nationalists in this region to be respected should be something they would agree to, if they are serious about being true to this ideology.

This region is also similar to other parts of the European model, in that it still maintains some active Monarchies in the region, which were not transformed by the Republican revolutions of the 19th century. It is also notable, from the perspective of a restoration of a Westphalian model, in that it has the nation of Sweden in the region. The Swedish monarchy was one of the most important actors in the Thirty Years War, which lead to the establishment of the first Westphalian order.
