Neo Westphalian Europe Part 21: Republic of Alsace-Lorraine

The Alsatian republic is the final state that will serve as a buffer between France and Germany. It is based around the linguistic grouping of those who speak the Alsatian language.  The Alsatian territories are tied to parts of the neighbouring Lorraine region, via historical associations. The German Empire used this history to create the vassal state of Alsace-Lorraine during the latter part of the 1800’s. These regions reverted back to France at the end of World War 1.

It is hypothesised here that the current Alsatian nationalist movement will be used to create a fully independent Republic of Alsace-Lorraine, free of both French and German influence. This state will then serve as a final buffer between the borders of France and Germany, after the removal of the European Union from the continent.  This should eliminate the risk of renewed conflict between these nations.

The final borders of this republic will be made up of the former French departments of Bas-Rhin, Haut-Rhin, Moselle and the Territory of Belfort.

The flag of this region is the flag of the Alsace-Lorraine national forum, which was adopted in 1910. It is based on the Rot-un-Wiss flag of Gerard d’Alsace, the Duke of Lorraine in the 11th Century. Added to this flag is the cross of Lorraine. It is likely that this defaced version of the flag helps differentiate it from the similar looking Polish flag.
